About This Pattern

This one has a sunny, playful energy, the kind of project that makes me grin while I'm counting stitches. A hot pink flamingo, a cheerful yellow pineapple, and a leafy green monstera leaf all show up as one tropical trio. It's light, it's a little silly, and it never once asks me to take it too seriously.

Your hands get to work small here, which is its own kind of satisfying. You're pinching a magic ring tight, keeping tension even with a steel hook, and leaving one section soft and unstuffed on purpose. There's embroidery for the beak marking and careful sewing to join head, body, leaf, and crown into finished little shapes.

Once it's done, I like to see this trio perched somewhere low and easy to spot, a windowsill or a shelf near the door. The flamingo's neck bends into its own curve, so it leans and tilts like it's actually standing there. Grouped together, the pink, yellow, and green catch the eye without needing anything else around them.

  • Start the flamingo's head with a magic ring and build it up through gentle increases to round out the crown.
  • Leave the neck section unstuffed on purpose so you can bend it into that classic flamingo curve later.
  • Work the tiny beak as its own piece in orange, then embroider the black tip before sewing it to the face.
  • Shape the main body in the round, increasing steadily until you settle into the plain rounds that finish the torso.
  • Crochet a second body in yellow for the pineapple, then top it with a dark green crown and stem.
  • Work the monstera leaf through its own shaping rounds in bright green for that pointed, lobed look.
  • Add the eyes, legs, and chain details, then sew every piece together into its finished charm form.

On the desk

  • Hot pink or bright pink crochet thread (size 10) or fingering weight yarn for the flamingo body
  • Small amount of orange yarn for the beak
  • Black yarn for the beak tip and eyes
  • Bright green yarn for the monstera leaf
  • Yellow yarn for the pineapple body
  • Dark green yarn for the pineapple crown
  • 1.5mm or 1.75mm crochet hook (steel hook for thread, or size appropriate for your yarn)
  • Stitch marker
  • Tapestry needle
  • Small amount of polyester fiberfill stuffing
  • Gauge is not critical for this project, but your stitches should be tight enough that stuffing does not show through. If you see gaps, go down a hook size.

Chain (ch)

Single crochet (sc):

Insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (two loops on hook), yarn over and pull through both loops. This is your main stitch for amigurumi.

Increase (inc): Work two single crochet stitches into the same stitch. This adds one stitch to your count.

Invisible decrease (inv dec):

Insert hook through front loops only of the next two stitches, yarn over and pull through both front loops, yarn over and pull through remaining loops. Creates a cleaner decrease than standard methods.

Slip stitch (sl st):

Insert hook into stitch, yarn over, and pull through both the stitch and the loop on your hook in one motion. Used for joining and finishing.

Half double crochet (hdc):

Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (three loops on hook), yarn over and pull through all three loops.

Double crochet (dc):

Yarn over, insert hook into stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through remaining two loops.

Eyes

Using black yarn, embroider two small French knots or satin stitch dots on either side of the head, just above the beak.

Legs

Cut two pieces of wire, each about 4 inches long. Bend one end of each wire into a small three-pronged foot shape (like a bird’s foot with forward-facing toes).

Using pink yarn, wrap the wire tightly from the foot up to the top, securing with tiny dots of fabric glue if needed. Continue wrapping until the entire leg is covered.

Insert the top of each wrapped wire leg into the bottom of the body. Secure with a few stitches and a small amount of glue for durability.

Sew both wings to the sides of the body.

Crown

With dark green yarn, ch 8, sl st in second ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, hdc, sc, sl st. This creates one leaf. Repeat to make 5 leaves total.

Sew all leaves together at their bases, then attach to the top of the pineapple body. Fan them out slightly for a natural look.

Stem

Ch 10 with green yarn. Sl st in second ch from hook and across. Fasten off. Sew to the base of the leaf.

Work a second leaf if desired for a fuller look, as shown in the photos.

Where it goes

  • Clip the flamingo onto a tote bag or backpack zipper as a small, swingy accent.
  • Group the trio on a plant shelf next to real greenery so the pineapple and leaf blend right in.
  • Set them along a windowsill with other mini amigurumi for a cheerful little lineup.
  • Hand off the pineapple or leaf alone as a tiny keepsake tucked into a card or small gift bag.

Color ideas

  • Classic Tropical Hot pink for the flamingo's head and body, orange for the beak with a black tip, bright green for the monstera leaf, and yellow with a dark green crown and stem for the pineapple.
  • Soft Pastel Garden Blush pink for the flamingo body and head, pale peach for the beak, sage green for the leaf, and a buttery yellow pineapple topped with deeper sage for the crown and stem.

Care

Hand wash each piece gently in cool water if needed, since tight amigurumi stitches can trap soap if you're not careful.

Lay the flamingo, pineapple, and leaf flat to dry rather than hanging them, so the shapes keep their form.

Reshape the flamingo's bendable neck by hand after washing or storage, and tuck the whole trio somewhere dry and away from direct sun.

Easy to get wrong

Stuffing the flamingo's neck

Keep the neck rounds unstuffed so the piece stays soft enough to bend into its curved shape. Save the fiberfill for the head and body only.

Beak sewn at the wrong angle

Position the beak so it angles slightly downward from the face, matching a real flamingo's profile. Pin it in place before sewing to check the angle first.

Gaps showing stuffing through thread stitches

If you can see fiberfill peeking through, your tension is too loose for the thread or yarn weight you chose. Drop down a hook size until the stitches close up snugly.
